Some people just don't think before they speak--and often their hurtful words are a reflection of some insecurity about themselves. HUGS, Emma.
I agree with Marcy, having a great friendship with a person is an important factor in a relationship. :)

I gasped when I read your friend's comment. (The fact you refer to her as a friend shows you're a much more forgiving person than I am.) When I was a teenager, my mother reassured me that any woman who wanted to get married could find someone to marry. With that pronouncement, any societal pressure I imagined fell away. The trick is to find the right someone, and you're holding out for him. Good for you. Emma.

We writers remind one another that no agent is better than a bad agent. I wish, as a society, we reminded young people that no partner is better than a bad (or wrong-for-them) partner.

I wish I could give you a big hug. I'm still newly enough married to remember how much it hurt when I had similar things said to me. There was absolutely nothing wrong with me, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with you. You're being smart about waiting to find the right person. Marriage ties your whole life to another person's, and you want that to be the right person.

If I can pass on one lesson to the next generation of woman about love and relationships I think it would be to wait until you find someone who can be your best friend as well as your husband. (You'd be surprised how long it took me to think of what I'd want to pass on if it could only be one thing.) For some reason, I think we're more objective when looking at people in terms of do we or don't we want to spend time on maintaining a friendship. We need to look at potential spouses the same way because we're going to be spending more time with them than with any friend.

I'm so glad I could help! I was very happy and comfortable hiking the Inca trail in my old running pants. And I saved plenty of money. I hadn't even thought of the rubbing of the zippers. That would be so uncomfortable! Have a great trip. It will be amazing!

OMG!! Thank you!! You have just saved me from buying a pair!! Im doing the Inca trail in 3 weeks time and had myself convinced that Id need a pair. I havent worn them for over 15 years and was sworn off them as the zipper would always irritate me, always rub on my knees.....but in preparation for the INca Trail I started to convince myself that I would have to get a pair! But after reading your blog, I have decided not to get them, you are dead right, I will just stick with the basic, cheap pants Ive had for the last couple of years that have done just fine on other treks. Thank you!!!

There is definitely a fine balance between being a good listener and being yourself while participating in a conversation. I know that sometimes I can "rub people the wrong way" when I state my opinion. But the truth is, I am not going to stop doing that. I have to be true to myself and I have the right to my opinions. It can be hard to be ourselves, especially if we worry about whether or not people will like us as we are. I'm so glad you are speaking up and being yourself. The people who matter will really appreciate it. Here's to one less brick! :)

Yes, we are worth it, Pat! I'm so glad that you like the idea. And, I must say, there is something about hot pink that is extra motivating. :)

I've always been really good at listening. And it's become my wall in social situations. As long as other people feel good about themselves and they get to do all the talking, I never have to come out of hiding to say who I am or what I think. The down side is that very few of those people ever find out who I am-- and most of them come away thinking I'm meek and a push-over. Which is so far from true! This year, I'm practicing speaking up when I have an opinion at work. The first brick in the wall. =)

As someone who wears Champion loose tee shirts and from Target for workouts, I applaud your decision to honor your commitment to fitness with workout clothes that fit and look good. In fact, I'm going to do the same--one piece at a time. We're worth it.
