When I was a teenager, my mother reassured me that any woman who wanted to get married could find someone to marry. With that pronouncement, any societal pressure I imagined fell away. I'm still newly enough married to remember how much it hurt when I had similar things said to me. There was absolutely nothing wrong with me, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with you. You're being smart about waiting to find the right person. Marriage ties your whole life to another person's, and you want that to be the right person. If I can pass on one lesson to the next generation of woman about love and relationships I think it would be to wait until you find someone who can be your best friend as well as your husband. (You'd be surprised how long it took me to think of what I'd want to pass on if it could only be one thing.) For some reason, I think we're more objective when looking at people in terms of do we or don't we want to spend time on maintaining a friendship. I havent worn them for over 15 years and was sworn off them as the zipper would always irritate me, always rub on my knees.....but in preparation for the INca Trail I started to convince myself that I would have to get a pair! But after reading your blog, I have decided not to get them, you are dead right, I will just stick with the basic, cheap pants Ive had for the last couple of years that have done just fine on other treks. I know that sometimes I can "rub people the wrong way" when I state my opinion. But the truth is, I am not going to stop doing that. I have to be true to myself and I have the right to my opinions. It can be hard to be ourselves, especially if we worry about whether or not people will like us as we are. I'm so glad you are speaking up and being yourself. The people who matter will really appreciate it.
